Tips for a More Copasetic Commute

Making use of the HOV lane while doing a solid to the ozone sounds like a no-brainer, but some have horror stories about commuting! Avoid bad experiences by following these tips for a more copasetic commute:

Establish rules in the very beginning: Things like eating, smoking, and using a device en route may not be a problem for you, but everyone should agree on carpool etiquette before your first trip.

Stay connected: Create and share one another's contact info as well as a schedule of who's driving, when, and what route will be taken. Using something like a Google doc provides real-time updates to making changes to the schedule is a cinch.

Reimbursements and other costs: If driving responsibilities are shared equally, no money should need to change hands. However, if one member is doing more than his fair share, determine how much he/she will be reimbursed and by what means, i.e. PayPal, cash, etc. Establishing these things early on will alleviate the headaches that always accompany cost.

Be considerate of the route: If the goal of carpooling is to get to work and back, no member should insert extra stops for any reason. Grocery shopping, picking up children from daycare, stopping at the ATM, etc. should all be done on one's own time.

Be respectful: Keeping all vehicles clean and well maintained, being considerate of one another's time and space, and driving carefully are all very important when carpooling.
